From Discovery, And Research Innovation To Reality
Our services

WHRIA was established with merging the private practices of Associate Professors John Eden and Thierry Vancaillie. WHRIA has three major components – clinical services, research and information services.

Clinical Services

Prof Vancaillie heads the Pelvic Pain Clinic which is also staffed by; physiotherapist Sherin Jarvis, acupuncturist Bernice Lowe, psychologist Margaret O’Brien. Our new female gynaecologists Dr Juman Farjo and  Dr Yasmin Tan are invovled in the treatment of pelvic pain. Several new causes of pelvic pain have been described in the last few years including pelvic floor spasm and pudental neuralgia. Effective treatments are now available for these distressing conditions – many of which have been developed and tested by our staff.

In 2012 we hope to establish a PCOS Clinic and a non-IVF fertility unit, the Natural Fertility Clinic, which will offer couples lifestyle changes, herbals, supplements and acupuncture as well as medical options. A/Prof John Eden and is an expert in these fields as well as menopause. Our new gynaecologists are also involved in the treatment and management of these health issues.

Research

A/Prof Eden heads the Barbara Gross Research Unit (BGRU) located on the ground floor of the RHW. Dr Jinzhu Liu is the research manager (Phone – 9382 6702) and Dr Sheila O’Neil  the Senior Medical Officer. Currently we have around 20 research projects underway. One of the aims of WHRIA is to move new treatments from research into the clinics as quickly as possible. One of these new treatments is a local anaesthetic gel invented by A/Prof Vancaillie. It is introduced into the endocervical canal via syringe. Within 90 seconds it gently and painlessly dilates the cervix and anaesthetises the uterus. The outcome, procedures such as hysteroscopy, endometrial ablations and fitting of Mirena devices can be performed without the need for GA.
