Treatment of Cold Sores
The aim of this study is to determine if a new combination therapy containing lactoferrin (capsule and gel) is safe and well tolerated as a treatment for cold sores. This study also aims to see if this new treatment is as effective as a common treatment (Zovirax cold sore cream). A pilot, open labelled study. All study patients will be randomly allocated to one of two active study treatments. For each participant, one herpetic (cold sore) episode will be assessed.
Inclusion criteria:
- Healthy subjects at least 18 years of age
- History of recurrent cold sores with at least three episodes in the past year
- Have experienced prodromal (awareness of tingling sensation where lesion appears) symptoms of cold sores during at least half of the previous cold sore episodes
- History of at least half of the cold sore episodes producing classical lesions (i.e. episodes that progressed from blistering through to crusting, scab formation, and healing)
- Subjects must agree to abstain from the use of other topical or oral antiherpetic agents, from anti-inflammatory medications, and from the use of any topical treatments in the area of the lesion (cosmetics, lip balms, and sun screens etc)
