Hormone Replacement Therapy has been used safely in Australia for many years. August 2017 Australian release of a safe, easily absorbed HRT provides an exact duplicate of the human hormone progesterone for women with menopausal symptoms. We have known for fifteen years that HRT that contains a synthetic progestin is linked to a slightly increased risk of breast cancer, if used for more than five years. A recent study in 2016 by Asi and colleagues showed that body identical HRT containing natural progesterone was associated with a significantly lower risk of breast cancer than HRT containing progestin. The Erbium (or Er:Yag) laser is a non-invasive and non-hormonal treatment for minor vaginal relaxation, prolapse of the vaginal wall (s) and urinary incontinence.
What causes vaginal relaxation?
Relaxation of the vaginal tissues with subsequent prolapse of the vaginal walls and bladder or rectum can be a natural aging phenomenon. Pregnancy and vaginal delivery are major contributing factors.
Other factors that may influence the occurrence of relaxation are obesity and lack of appropriate muscular exercises.
It seems logical that women who maintain a healthy life style minimize their risk to develop vaginal prolapse, but our genetic make-up is sometimes such that relaxation is unavoidable.
Feeling sad or blue is a common symptom of menopause affecting 19-29% of women. However, studies have shown that clinical depression is not more common during menopause, except for those women who have long-standing depression or anxiety. Knowing this and discussing a plan with your physician for your mental fitness, medication and sleep options can help you manage your life through menopause and beyond. See our Health Information section to read more or download our information sheet about hormone therapy, menopause and good sleep, written by A/Prof John Eden.
